UV-Strahlung und Outdoor-Stoffe: 5 Fakten, die über die Lebensdauer entscheiden

Every summer we get sent photos of cushions that look ten seasons old after just two – faded, stained, brittle. Almost always, the cause is the same: UV radiation combined with the wrong fabric. These five facts explain what the sun really does to outdoor textiles – and three of them are things almost nobody knows.

Fact 1: UV doesn't fade the fabric – it fades the dyeing method

Whether a cushion fades after two summers isn't decided by the material alone, but by how the colour got into the fabric in the first place. With piece-dyed textiles – the standard for cheap cushions – the colour sits as a thin layer on the surface of the fibre. UV radiation breaks down the dye molecules in that layer, and the cushion grows paler summer after summer.

Solution-dyed fibres like olefin, by contrast, carry the pigment right through the core of the fibre: even if the surface ages, the same colour shows through underneath. For a closer look at how olefin dyeing actually works, see our material guide What is olefin?

Fact 2: the sun doesn't just fade fabrics – it makes them brittle

Fading is the visible problem, but it isn't the most expensive one. Over time, UV radiation breaks down the polymer chains within the fibre itself – the fabric loses tensile strength and becomes brittle. You usually only notice once it's too late: the seam holds, but the fabric next to it tears the moment you pull on it.

Fact 3: lightfastness is measurable – on a scale from 1 to 8

Almost any manufacturer is free to write "UV-resistant" on their cushions – the term isn't protected. What actually makes the claim measurable is the lightfastness scale (the Blue Wool Scale): level 1 means the colour starts to shift after only brief sun exposure, level 8 stands for the highest colour stability. Each level roughly doubles the exposure time needed before fading becomes visible.

Good outdoor fabrics sit at level 7 to 8, while indoor upholstery fabrics are often only rated 4 to 5 – which is exactly why an indoor cushion fades so quickly once it's put out on the patio. So it's worth asking a simple question when buying: "What lightfastness level does this fabric have?" If the manufacturer can't answer, that tells you something too.

Fact 4: cushions fade even behind glass

The fact that surprises most people: window glass does block most UV-B radiation – but the long-wave UV-A radiation largely passes straight through, and that's precisely the main driver of textile fading. So cushions in a conservatory, behind balcony glazing, or on a windowsill aren't safe just because there's no risk of sunburn.

On top of that there's a location effect outdoors: a cushion on a south-facing balcony on a rooftop terrace at 30 degrees receives many times the annual UV dose of a cushion in partial shade. If you have the choice, store or position your cushions where there's shade at midday – it's the cheapest UV protection there is.

Fact 5: no spray helps against UV – only material and habits do

Impregnating sprays protect against water and stains, not against UV – the radiation reaches the colour pigments regardless. There is no after-the-fact treatment that turns a piece-dyed fabric into a lightfast one. A cushion's UV protection is decided at the point of purchase, not afterwards.

What does help afterwards are good habits: standing cushions up after sunbathing instead of leaving them lying flat, putting them in a cushion box or indoors during longer absences, and storing them dry over winter. The full routine is in our guide How to care for outdoor cushions.

The 3-minute check: does your cushion already have UV damage?

Before you invest in new cushions, it's worth taking a closer look at your old ones – three quick checks are enough:

1. The seam comparison. Look under the seam flaps or on the underside of the cushion: the fabric there has been protected from the sun. If the colour there is noticeably stronger than on top, the dye has already suffered UV damage – and it only gets more visible from year to year, never better.

2. The fold test. Firmly fold a corner of the cover between your fingers and rub it. If the fabric feels papery, crackles, or pale fracture lines appear in the weave, the fibres have become brittle – the stage before the tearing described in Fact 2.

3. The wipe test. Wipe firmly over the sun-exposed area with a damp white cloth. If coloured or grey fibre residue transfers onto the cloth, the damaged fibre surface is already breaking down.

Two out of three tests positive? Then the cushion is on its way out – it will survive next season visually, but not mechanically. These are exactly the kinds of cushions we see in the photos customers send us before placing their first made-to-measure order: the fabric has given up, while the foam and furniture underneath are still perfectly fine.

From real life: constant sun in Saint-Tropez

What this looks like in real-world use, we see with our most demanding customers: our cushions are in use in, among other places, luxury hotels in Saint-Tropez and Cannes – Mediterranean sun from morning to night, plus salty sea air, which for many textiles is the second big ageing factor. That's exactly where solution-dyed olefin proves what it's made of: the fabrics keep their colour even after several years and still look brand new.

We're happy to pass on two things from this experience. First: for full-sun locations, we tend to recommend lighter fabric tones – not because of fading, since thanks to the dyeing method in the fibre core dark tones hold up just as well, but because light surfaces heat up noticeably less in the midday sun. Second: the core is half the story. We use genuine mattress-grade foam – the same material found in high-quality sleep mattresses that easily cost four figures. As long as the UV-stable cover protects the core, a cushion like this will survive many seasons instead of sagging after two summers.

And do the cushions have to come indoors every evening? No. Standing them up after sunbathing or putting them in the cushion box during longer absences extends their lifespan – but outdoor cushions are made to stay outdoors. Summer is for enjoying, not for shifting furniture.

Frequently asked questions about UV and outdoor fabrics

Can faded outdoor cushions be re-dyed?

In practice, no. With piece-dyed fabrics, the colour layer has been destroyed, and synthetic fibres such as polyester barely take up commercial fabric dye at all. Fading can only be prevented in advance – through lightfast fabrics and shaded storage.

Does the sun also damage the foam inside a cushion?

Barely, directly, since the foam sits protected underneath the cover. It only becomes critical once the cover turns brittle and tears – then the core ages faster too, from light and moisture. A UV-stable cover always protects both.

Does impregnating spray help against fading?

No. Impregnating sprays work against water and dirt, not against UV radiation. Colour stability only comes from the fibre's own dyeing method – it cannot be created after the fact.

Do dark cushions fade faster than light ones?

Dark and bold colours show fading sooner, because the contrast between the original and faded colour is greater. With solution-dyed fabrics, however, the shade barely matters – the pigments sit protected within the fibre core.
