1. What sets custom outdoor cushions apart

Custom outdoor cushions differ from off-the-shelf products in three ways: fit, material quality and craftsmanship. While hardware-store cushions come in fixed standard sizes and overhang, sag or leave gaps on every other piece of furniture, every Lulu-Belle cushion is individually cut for your furniture. We make every measurement individually, with a guaranteed tolerance that scales with size (up to 100 cm max. 1 cm, over 100 cm up to 2 m max. 2 cm, over 2 m up to 3 m max. 3 cm). This tolerance exists because the foam core is delivered rolled and vacuum-packed and expands again once unpacked, depending on humidity, packing time and compression. Custom sizes cost no extra.

The material difference matters at least as much. Lulu-Belle uses exclusively 100% olefin cover fabrics – water-repellent, UV-stable and dirt-repellent by material property, not by chemical coating. The foam core is mattress-grade PUR foam: shape-stable, water-repellent, and it keeps its shape even after years of intensive use. That's reflected in 740+ reviews with a consistently high rating.

Every cushion is hand-sewn in our own workshop in Szentgotthárd, Hungary. No mass production, no subcontractors, no middlemen. That makes Lulu-Belle one of the few providers in the DACH region where "custom-made" really means custom-made.

2. Sun lounger cushions and custom outdoor mattresses

Sun lounger cushions and outdoor mattresses are the heart of our range. For every type of furniture – a classic teak sun lounger, a modern aluminium lounger, a Bali daybed, an outdoor bed or a pool lounge – there's a matching model.

Torn between the two lounger models? The comparison Miami or Marocco – which lounger cushion suits you? walks you to a decision in three questions.

The Miami lounger cushion is the elegant choice for classic wooden loungers: slimmer, more elegant, with a softer feel, available from 6 cm thick. The Marocco outdoor mattress is the sturdier option with mattress-like lying comfort, available from 8 cm thick – ideal for daybeds, outdoor beds and pool loungers where you spend longer stretches of time. Both are complemented by the Milano bolster cushion as a neck support and the Tulum wedge cushion as an ergonomic back support.

How to correctly measure your sun lounger and which thickness suits which usage pattern is covered in our own detailed guides: Custom sun lounger cushions – how to measure correctly, Outdoor daybed mattresses for real sleeping comfort, and – if you're looking for the optimal size – Custom outdoor mattress: the complete size chart.

And if you're searching for a "waterproof" outdoor mattress: why water-repellent is the smarter choice, and what an outdoor mattress cover can (and can't) do, is explained in our guide Waterproof outdoor mattress? What really matters.

To see how such custom sizes work in professional use, take a look at our case study Custom outdoor cushions for hotels & hospitality – with four real projects, from a family spa to a château in France.

Model Ideal for Thickness
Marocco outdoor mattress Daybeds, outdoor beds, pool loungers 8–14 cm
Miami lounger cushion Classic sun loungers, wooden loungers 6–10 cm
Tulum wedge cushion Ergonomic back support on loungers Wedge shape
Milano bolster cushion Neck support on loungers and daybeds Round format

3. Seat, bench and lounge furniture cushions

Dedicated custom-cushion lines exist for garden benches, lounge furniture, pallet sofas and outdoor armchairs. The Nizza bench cushion is the most versatile model in the range – suited to classic benches (45 cm depth) just as well as deep lounge furniture (70–90 cm depth). It's configured in any length, depth and thickness.

To complete the set, pair it with the Monaco back cushion – especially important for lounge furniture with a low backrest or none at all. For individual chairs and armchairs there's the Cairo outdoor cushion as a square seat cushion, and the Ibiza garden chair cushion as a one-piece armchair cushion with a back section.

Concrete instructions for every furniture type are in our specialist guides: Custom bench cushion – choosing the right length and thickness, Lounge furniture cushions: the complete guide to custom lounge sets, as well as, for DIY builders, Turning pallet furniture into a lounge with cushions.

And when it comes to how seat cushions, back cushions and fastening work together, our guide Custom Lounge Cushions shows how the complete set comes together – including corner modules, trapezoid shapes and cut-outs for posts.

Furniture type Recommended combination Thickness
Classic garden bench Nizza bench cushion 6–8 cm
Lounge furniture (rattan, wood, aluminium) Nizza + Monaco + Cairo (set) 8–10 cm
Pallet sofa Nizza + Monaco 8–10 cm
Garden chair, armchair Ibiza garden chair cushion 5–8 cm
Narrow balcony bench Narrow custom Nizza 5–7 cm

Still deciding which seating option actually suits you? The honest comparison Outdoor bean bag, lounge chair or hammock? helps with the fundamental decision – including the strengths and weaknesses of all three options.

4. Outdoor cushions, back cushions and accessories

Individual cushions turn a set of pads into a coherent look. The Cairo outdoor cushion comes as a square standard seat cushion in several custom sizes. Anyone looking to maximise the comfort of a lounge or a daybed can combine it with the Milano bolster cushion as a neck or armrest support and the Tulum wedge cushion as an ergonomic back support for sun loungers.

A tried-and-tested set idea for a lounge: three Cairo cushions in 40×40 cm in an accent colour, two Milano bolster cushions at the head and foot end, plus a continuous seat and back cushion in a calm base tone. That creates visual depth without clutter and comes remarkably close to the premium lounge feel of a hotel resort.

For custom cushion sizes – such as rectangular 60×40 cm lumbar cushions, round seat cushions or special shapes – it's best to ask directly by email. Lulu-Belle fundamentally makes everything to individual measurements.

5. Material: 100% olefin and PUR foam

Lulu-Belle relies on two core materials for every cushion: 100% olefin as the cover fabric and mattress-grade PUR foam as the core. Both materials are specifically engineered for intensive outdoor use and are the central reason why custom cushions last considerably longer than typical hardware-store standard products.

What olefin does better for outdoor cushions:

  • Water-repellent by material property – not through a chemical protective coating that wears off after a few seasons
  • UV-stable – colours stay rich for years, with no fading like classic polyester
  • Dirt-repellent – sunscreen, sand and drink spills wipe off with water and a mild cloth
  • Breathable – a less sweaty seat on hot days than with vinyl coatings
100% white olefin fabric from Lulu-Belle with water beads – the water-repellent property of the material made visible
100% olefin: water beads off without any chemical impregnation needed.

Three olefin qualities are available: Standard (for covered areas and occasional use), Premium (for daily use in the open garden) and Premium ZigZag (Premium quality with a ZigZag design pattern as a visual accent). If you're unsure which fabric suits your garden, you can order free fabric samples and compare them on site. Detailed background on fabric and foam is available on our material pages: Our fabric and Our foam.

How olefin holds up head-to-head against acrylic and polyester – with every strength and weakness of the three fibres – is shown in the comparison Olefin, acrylic or polyester? An honest outdoor fabric comparison.

And every fundamental material question – manufacturing, safety, care, sourcing – is answered in the Q&A guide What is olefin?.

And if you're specifically after the right fabric for loose cushions and outdoor seat cushions, the selection guide Best fabric for outdoor cushions? covers the five buying criteria plus a fabric-sample self-test.

Which foam thickness suits which piece of furniture and which usage pattern is explained in detail in our guide What foam thickness for outdoor cushions? as further reading.

6. XXL, special and custom sizes

Most industry-standard sizes range from 60×180 cm to 100×200 cm. Lulu-Belle also makes every XXL format up to 200×200 cm, as well as custom sizes at no extra charge. Typical use cases: Bali daybeds at 200×140 cm, pool lounge islands at 200×200 cm, outdoor beds at 180×200 cm, or pallet sofas with custom sizes like 240×120 cm.

The complete overview of every common standard size – including which thickness suits which size and what use case each format covers – is in our detailed guide Custom outdoor mattress: the complete size chart from 90×200 to 200×200.

That custom sizes are everyday business for us is shown by our projects for hotels and hospitality – including a 260 × 200 cm lounge-island cushion for a thermal spa: 4 real hotel projects with custom outdoor cushions.

Format Ideal for Recommended thickness
90×200 cm Classic single sun lounger 8 cm
120×200 cm Narrow daybed, pallet lounger 10 cm
140×200 cm Standard daybed (most popular) 10–12 cm
160×200 cm Queen daybed, double lounging space 12 cm
180×200 cm King daybed, outdoor bed 12 cm
200×200 cm XXL lounge island, pavilion bed 12–14 cm
Custom sizes DIY builds, antique furniture, narrow balconies depending on use

For very narrow benches (30–35 cm depth), antique wooden benches with unusual dimensions, or special seating areas on treehouses and children's garden furniture, there's likewise no technical limit. You enter the measurements in the configurator, the price appears, and the rest takes care of itself.

7. Care, storage and seasonal use

With the right care, outdoor cushions last many years; with the wrong treatment, often just one season. The most important routines are refreshingly simple: wipe down regularly with a damp cloth, use mild soapy water occasionally for tougher marks, stand cushions upright after rain so water can run off, and store them dry over winter whenever there's frost or snow.

Pool cushions are a discipline of their own: they're exposed daily to water, chlorine and full-intensity UV radiation. Which fabric, which thickness and which care routine hold up best by the pool is explained in our guide Custom pool cushions: waterproof, fast-drying and chlorine-resistant.

The second big adversary besides water is the sun itself: why cushions fade, what lightfastness means, and how to spot UV damage yourself in three minutes are covered in 5 facts about UV radiation and outdoor fabrics.

And for anyone who doesn't want the garden season to end in September: which four building blocks genuinely buy you extra weeks on the patio is covered in the guide Extending the patio season into autumn.

Care routine through the year:

  • Spring: bring cushions out of winter storage, wipe them down thoroughly, and plan your configurator order for the new season in good time (delivery takes 2–3 weeks, 3–4 weeks during peak summer)
  • Summer: wipe down roughly once a week, stand upright after rain, treat any marks immediately with a damp cloth
  • Autumn: clean thoroughly before storing, let dry completely, note down the care routine
  • Winter: store dry in a basement, garage or garden shed – never wet, and never for too long under a plastic cover

Detailed instructions for cleaning, stain treatment, impregnation and winter storage are in our care guide Caring for outdoor cushions the right way – so they last forever. For inspiration for the summer season plus design ideas for your patio, see our guide Summer patio design.

Frequently asked questions about custom outdoor cushions

How do I measure my garden furniture for a custom cushion?

You measure the usable seat or lying surface – not the outer frame. Three values are enough: length, depth (or width for loungers), and desired thickness. On benches with armrests, measure from inner edge to inner edge; on loungers, measure the full outer edge. A second check measurement takes 30 seconds and prevents most mistakes.

What thickness do I need?

Rule of thumb: 5–6 cm for chairs and short sitting periods, 8 cm standard for garden benches and sun loungers, 10 cm for lounge furniture and daily use, 12 cm for daybeds, 14 cm for full outdoor-bed comfort. Detailed recommendations are in our foam thickness guide.

How long does delivery take?

Custom cushions reach you in 2–3 weeks. During peak summer, production time can rise to 3–4 weeks, so it's best to order in spring. Shipping to Germany and Austria is free. A shipping fee applies for other EU countries, and EU shipping is also free from €599 order value. Details at Shipping information.

What do custom outdoor cushions cost?

The price depends on size, thickness and fabric. The Nizza bench cushion starts at around €124, the Marocco outdoor mattress at €137, the Miami lounger cushion at €183 (each in the standard configuration with standard fabric). Larger sizes and greater thicknesses increase the price – the exact figure is calculated by the online configurator on the relevant product page within seconds.

Are the fabrics really weatherproof?

Yes. 100% olefin is water-repellent, UV-stable and dirt-repellent – by material property, not through a chemical coating. In rain, stand the cushion upright; store it dry over winter. That way, olefin cushions last many years without any notable fading.

Can I see fabric samples before ordering?

Yes, you can order free fabric samples at any time via the product page Free fabric sample. That lets you compare the colours and feel of all three olefin qualities at your leisure, at home.

Does Lulu-Belle deliver to Austria and Switzerland?

Yes, delivery to Austria is free by default, just like to Germany. For Switzerland, Norway and Liechtenstein we put together an individual shipping quote by email on request (customs and tax regulations require separate handling). Other EU countries such as France, Italy and Spain are also served – with a shipping fee, free from €599 order value. Current details are on the shipping page.

What happens if the cushion doesn't fit?

Since these are custom-made products, special return conditions apply. In practice, Lulu-Belle helps personally by email if there's a problem and works with you to find a solution. That's exactly why careful measuring and a second check measurement matter so much.

Conclusion – your custom cushion from Lulu-Belle
