Custom Sun Lounger Cushion: How to Take Measurements Correctly
A sun lounger without a perfectly fitting cushion is like a bed without a mattress – nice to look at, but no pleasure. If you've ever tried putting a standard cushion on a teak lounger, an aluminium sun lounger or a self-built daybed, you know the problem: it overhangs, slides around, or leaves gaps at the front and back. The solution is a custom cushion – and the first step towards that is taking accurate measurements. In this guide, you'll learn step by step how to measure your sun lounger precisely, which thickness suits which use, and which mistakes you should absolutely avoid.
Why accurate measuring decides everything
When buying a custom outdoor cushion, a single value determines the end result: accurate measuring. A lounger cushion that's two centimetres too short leaves an unsightly gap at the head or foot end. One that's two centimetres too long hangs over uncomfortably and shifts with every movement. Both are annoying – and both are entirely avoidable.
Custom cushions forgive small tolerances because they're soft and mould to the lounging surface. For every made-to-measure order, Lulu-Belle works with a tolerance of ±1 cm up to 100 cm in length, ±2 cm up to 200 cm, and ±3 cm beyond that. This means your measurement doesn't need to be millimetre-precise – but it does need to be correct. A deviation of 5 cm can no longer be compensated for.
At the same time, correct measuring is more than just length times width. The shape of the lounging surface, any curves, removable head or foot sections, and the desired thickness of the cushion all play a role. Preparation: which sun lounger do you have?
Before you pick up the tape measure, it's worth taking a quick look at your lounger. Every design has its own quirks – and knowing them helps you measure correctly.
Classic wooden sun lounger (teak, acacia, eucalyptus)
Here, the cushion usually sits on a rectangular frame with a slatted lounging surface. The dimensions are usually well defined, since the wood is precisely made. Check whether the head or foot end is adjustable – if so, measure in the flat position.
Aluminium or metal lounger with fabric webbing
These loungers often have a fabric-covered lounging surface that sags slightly when in use. Measure the frame dimensions here, not the sagging fabric – the cushion should rest on the frame, not sink into a dip.
Daybed and outdoor bed
Larger lounging surfaces from 100 cm width upwards, often with a raised edge or backrest. Here you measure like a mattress size: width × length of the inner lounging surface. More on this in the Special cases section.
Self-built lounger or pallet furniture

What you need for measuring:
- A flexible tape measure, at least 2 m long
- A pen and notepad, or your smartphone
- A second person helps – but isn't essential
- 10 minutes of time, without rushing
Step by step: how to measure correctly
The following guide walks you cleanly through the measuring process – so that, in the end, you have three reliable values: length, width and the desired thickness of the cushion.
Step 1: Bring the lounger into the flat position
If your sun lounger has an adjustable headrest, fold it fully flat. Only then are you measuring the actual lounging surface, not a shortened version. For loungers with a removable footrest, leave the footrest attached.
Step 2: Measure the length
Lay the tape measure lengthwise along the lounging surface – from the outermost edge at the head end to the outermost edge at the foot end. Run the tape measure along one side edge, not down the middle (in the middle, the curve of the fabric distorts the length).
Note the value in centimetres. Typical values range between 180 and 200 cm.
Step 3: Measure the width
Lay the tape measure across the lounging surface, from the outermost left edge to the outermost right edge. Measure at the widest point – some loungers are slightly wider at the shoulder area than at the feet. Typical values: 55 to 75 cm for classic loungers, from 100 cm for daybeds.
Step 4: Choose the desired thickness

Step 5: Double-check
Measure everything again. Really. A second measurement catches almost every mistake – and only costs you 30 seconds. Compare the two values and take the average if they differ slightly.

Are your values noticeably outside these ranges? Then you either have a very individual model – no problem for a custom cushion – or something went wrong while measuring. If in doubt, simply measure again.
The right foam thickness for loungers
Thickness determines lounging comfort. Too thin means: you feel the wooden slats or metal struts after 20 minutes. Too thick means: the cushion looks bulky and doesn't visually suit a slim lounger. That's why Lulu-Belle cushions come in several thicknesses to choose from.
Recommendation by intensity of use:
- 6 cm – for occasional use (weekend sun, lighter build)
- 8 cm – the standard for classic loungers, ideal for regular summer use
- 10 cm – premium comfort for longer lounging sessions and heavier build
- 12 cm – mattress-like comfort for daybeds, pool loungers and outdoor beds
The Miami sun lounger cushion is our classic choice for moderately used wooden loungers – elegant, light, comfortable. Anyone wanting maximum firmness and a mattress-like feel should choose the Marocco outdoor mattress from 8 cm thickness upwards. Both models can be configured in any size.
One important note: greater thickness also means more weight. A 12 cm cushion measuring 200 × 80 cm weighs around 8 kg – that's not a problem for storing and carrying, but it's worth being aware of. If you carry the cushion in and out daily, 8 cm is the better choice. If you leave it on a covered patio anyway, you can go for 10 or 12 cm without compromising on comfort.
Special cases: folding, adjustable, daybed
Some loungers need a slightly different measuring logic. Here are the three most common special cases and how to handle them.
Folding lounger with adjustable headrest
For loungers with an adjustable backrest, there are two options:
- One-piece cushion: You measure the total length in the flat position. The cushion bends along with the back section – this works well with foam up to 8 cm thick. With thicker cushions, the bending becomes uncomfortable.
- Two-piece cushion: You measure the head section and the seat/leg section separately and order two individual cushions. More comfortable, especially at higher thicknesses, but somewhat more expensive.
Our recommendation: for a thickness up to 8 cm, a one-piece cushion is sufficient. From 10 cm upwards, the two-piece version is worth it.
Daybed and outdoor bed
For wide lounging surfaces from 100 cm upwards, measure like a mattress: simply width × length × desired thickness. Here we recommend at least 10 cm, ideally 12 cm. A Marocco outdoor mattress in 200 × 140 × 12 cm turns any daybed into a fully-fledged outdoor sleeping spot.
A Milano bolster cushion as a neck support is also worthwhile – likewise available made to measure and in the same fabric.
Bali or lounge lounger with raised edges
Some lounge loungers have a raised edge all around. Here it's important to measure the inner lounging surface, not the outer edge. The cushion needs to fit inside the recess, not extend beyond it. If in doubt, leave one to two centimetres of margin so you can easily lift the cushion in and out later.
Common measuring mistakes – and how to avoid them

Fixing method
Classic lounger cushions usually don't need any fixing – their own weight and non-slip underside keep them in place on the lounger. What if my lounger has an adjustable headrest?
Measure the full length in the flat, lowered position. Cushions up to 8 cm thick bend along with the headrest without issue. For thicker cushions, we recommend a two-piece cushion – we then measure the head section and seat section separately.
How precisely do I need to measure?
