A garden lounge is only ever as good as its cushions. The frame lasts twenty years – but whether the lounge becomes your favourite spot or just a dumping ground comes down to the seat cushions and back cushions. In this guide we break the perfect lounge set down into its individual parts: seat, back, fastening, and the special shapes that off-the-shelf products simply can't handle – including the measuring mistake we see most often in the workshop.
Seat and back: why the set is what matters
Most of our lounge customers order seat cushions and back cushions together as a set – for good reason: a lounge only really works, visually and ergonomically, once both elements match in fabric, colour and proportion. Put a brand-new seat cushion next to a five-year-old, faded back cushion, and you'll notice it immediately.
We make no distinction when it comes to material: seat and back cushions get the same high-quality foam and the same olefin cover from us. Some manufacturers cut corners on the back cushion with loose loose-fill wadding that sags and creases after just one season – with a custom-made set, the back stays just as shape-stable as the seat.
One detail you won't see from the outside but will feel every time you sit down: inside our seat cushions there's a layer of fleece between the foam and the cover. It stops the fabric from shifting on the core when you sit down or change position – the cover stays smooth and crease-free instead of pulling askew after a few weeks.
The underrated element: custom back cushions
Back cushions are the part that disappoints fastest with catalogue lounges – too thin, too low, or simply not available in the width your sofa needs. Yet the back cushion is what decides seating comfort: it carries your body weight when you lean back and determines whether you can sit on the lounge for a whole evening or start sliding after an hour.
Our Monaco back cushion is therefore made to the exact centimetre – in width, height and thickness. For neck comfort on loungers and daybeds, the Milano bolster cushion completes the set, and loose Cairo outdoor cushions add a splash of colour – all three made from the same weatherproof olefin as the seat cushions.
The most common measuring mistake: forgotten cut-outs
When a complaint lands at the workshop that isn't really a complaint at all, it's almost always this: the seat cushion doesn't fit between the armrests because a corner post, a rounded armrest or a back strut was overlooked when measuring. Many pieces of lounge furniture don't have a continuous rectangular seat area – and a cushion that fits perfectly on paper ends up jamming against the post.
The solution is simple if you think of it before ordering: cut-outs. We make seat cushions with precisely placed notches for corner posts and struts – all we need is a quick sketch with measurements by email. So before ordering, run your hand over the seat surface once: every edge, every post, every curve belongs in the sketch.
Special shapes: corners, trapezoids, angled edges
Corner lounges and designer furniture in particular are rarely made up of rectangles alone. We regularly make these special shapes:
Corner modules: the connecting piece of a corner lounge – square or with a rounded inner edge, with cut-outs for posts on request.
Trapezoid modules: on round or curved lounge landscapes the seat sections taper – each element is its own trapezoid with its own measurements.
Angled edges: when armrests sit at an angle or the frame flares outward, we cut the foam to the matching angle.

Nothing slips: keeping cushions in place
The classic problem with lounges that have no fastening: you stand up, and the seat cushion comes with you. And with freestanding lounges there's wind to contend with too – a light back cushion can end up in the flowerbed after a single gust.
For this we've developed our own solution that can be ordered with any cushion: a strap that runs once around the cushion and the piece of furniture and closes with hook-and-loop fastening. No drilling, no hooks on the frame, undone in seconds when the covers need a wash – and it holds reliably even when guests shift around on the lounge. Pallet lounge or bought lounge furniture?
Both are everyday business for us: the classic bought lounge in poly-rattan, wood or aluminium – and the unbroken trend towards DIY pallet lounges. It makes no difference for custom manufacturing, only the typical formats differ: pallets bring their own fixed 120 × 80 centimetre grid, while bought furniture almost never comes in catalogue sizes.

Fabric and colour: why light tones win on the lounge
When it comes to colour, our practical experience gives us a clear recommendation: light tones. Not because of fading – our solution-dyed olefin holds its colour for years even in dark shades, as our UV guide explains in detail – but because light-coloured surfaces noticeably heat up less in the midday sun. On a lounge that sits in the sun in the afternoon, that's the difference between "sit down for a second and get straight back up" and a long, relaxed afternoon.
A light grey has proven especially popular: less sensitive to marks than white, calmer than bold colours, and it goes with practically any frame from anthracite to wood. It's best not to decide this on a screen, though: free fabric samples show colour and texture right on your own patio.

Care: unzip, wash, done
All covers unzip and are machine-washable – on a lounge that gets eaten on, drunk on and lived on, that's not a nicety, it's a requirement. Sunscreen stains from the weekend disappear in the machine, and the fleece lining ensures the cover sits smooth and even afterwards.
