A garden bench without a matching cushion is like a sofa without upholstery – functional, but never truly cosy. If you've ever put a standard cushion on a wooden bench, a pallet sofa or a lounge bench, you know the problem: it's too short, too long, too thin, or slides around. Why measurements decide everything for a bench cushion
For a custom outdoor cushion, two values are crucial: the length and the depth of the seating surface. Get these right, and the bench cushion fits like a glove – no overhang, no gaps, no sliding around. Get them wrong, and even the most beautiful fabric is wasted, because the cushion simply doesn't work, visually or practically.

Preparation: what type of garden bench do you have?
Before picking up the tape measure, it helps to take a quick look at your bench. Every design has its own quirks – and knowing them helps you measure correctly.
Classic wooden or metal bench
A rectangular seating surface, often with a backrest. Here the dimensions are usually clear, because the frame is precisely made. Check whether the seating surface is flat or slightly angled – this matters for choosing the thickness.
Bench with backrest
A classic for gardens and patios. Here you have two options: order just a seat cushion, or add a matching custom Monaco back cushion for the backrest. The combination significantly boosts comfort.
Pallet bench or self-build

Lounge bench and lounge furniture
Lounge furniture is deeper than classic benches (often 75–90 cm instead of 45–55 cm depth) and usually lower. It needs a thicker cushion and is ideally combined with back cushions. More on this in the Special cases section.
Corner bench and L-shape
Corner benches are measured in two segments – the seat and the cross-seat separately. The custom cushions are then made as two individual pieces that join seamlessly.
Narrow balcony bench
Balconies often have very narrow benches (depth 30–35 cm). Here, custom-made is essential, because standard cushions never fit.
What you need for measuring:
- A flexible tape measure, at least 2 m long
- Notepad or smartphone
- Optional: a second person for very long benches
- 10 minutes of time – not squeezed in between other things
Step by step: how to measure your bench correctly
The following guide leads you to three reliable values: length, depth and the desired thickness.
Step 1: Measure the length of the seating surface
Lay the tape measure lengthwise along the seating surface – from the outermost left edge to the outermost right edge. For benches with armrests, measure the inside (from armrest to armrest), not the whole bench frame. For benches without armrests, measure the full outer edge.
Typical values: 100–120 cm for 2-seaters, 160–180 cm for 3-seaters.
Step 2: Measure the depth of the seating surface
Lay the tape measure across the seating surface – from the front edge back to the backrest (or, for benches without a backrest, to the rear edge). Important: measure the usable seating area, not the entire bench frame.
Typical values: 35–45 cm for classic garden benches, 60–90 cm for lounge furniture.
Step 3: Choose the desired thickness

Step 4: Double-check
Measure everything a second time. These 30 seconds save you the frustration later of a cushion that doesn't fit. If the two measurements differ slightly, take the average.
Three values – that's all you need:
- Length in cm (e.g. 165)
- Depth in cm (e.g. 45)
- Thickness in cm (e.g. 8)

If your values are noticeably outside these ranges, you either have an individual piece of furniture – custom-made cushions solve that easily – or a mistake happened while measuring. If in doubt, simply measure again.
The right thickness: 5 cm to 12 cm compared
Thickness determines seating comfort. Too thin, and the hard bench surface presses through after 15 minutes. Too thick, and the cushion looks bulky or slides off the bench. Here's our recommendation by intensity of use.
Thickness recommendations for bench cushions:
- 5 cm – sufficient for short sitting sessions at the dining table or narrow balcony benches
- 6–7 cm – a good standard for garden benches with occasional use
- 8 cm – the sweet spot for regular summer use, our main recommendation for garden benches
- 10 cm – premium comfort for lounge furniture and daily, longer sitting sessions
- 12 cm – almost mattress-like, for outdoor daybeds and pallet benches used for sleeping

A practical note: greater thickness means more weight. A 10 cm cushion measuring 180 × 45 cm weighs around 5 kg – not a problem for storing, but noticeable. If you carry the cushion in and out daily, 8 cm is often the better choice. If you leave it on a covered patio anyway, you can go for 10 cm without compromise.
Special cases: corner benches, lounge furniture, pallet sofa
Some bench configurations need a different measuring logic. Here are the three most common special cases.
Corner bench in L-shape
For a corner bench, measure the two seating areas separately – the long segment and the cross segment. You then order two individual cushions. Important: leave a small gap (about 1–2 cm) at the corner join, so you can easily lift the cushions in and out.
Tip: order both cushions in the same fabric and the same thickness – otherwise it looks inconsistent.
Lounge furniture and outdoor sofa
Lounge furniture and outdoor lounges are deeper (70–90 cm) and usually lower than classic benches. Here you need:
- A seat cushion at the full bench depth – so not 45 cm, but 70–90 cm
- At least 8 cm thickness, ideally 10 cm
- A matching back cushion, since lounge furniture often has low or no backrests
- Optional: outdoor cushions for the full sofa effect

Pallet sofa
Pallet sofas almost always have non-standard dimensions. A standard Euro pallet measures 120 × 80 cm, but pallet sofas vary widely depending on construction. Measure the actual seating surface (i.e. what the cushion needs to sit on), not the entire pallet frame. Common measuring mistakes and how to avoid them
After hundreds of custom orders, we know exactly where customers most often go wrong. These five mistakes cost the most comfort and are all easy to avoid.

Fixing method
Bench cushions usually don't need any fixing. Their own weight and non-slip underside keep them in place on the bench. On benches with a backrest, they sit even more securely.
