The maths seems clear at first: a bench cushion for the balcony costs around €30 at a DIY store or online marketplace, while a made-to-measure cushion in olefin costs a multiple of that. But anyone who looks at the cushions again after the third summer does the sums differently. We compare, criterion by criterion, where cheap outdoor cushions actually fail, what "UV-resistant" on the label really means, and how the honest sum works out over three seasons. Including the three situations that bring customers to us most often, and the cases where the cheap cushion is still the right choice.
Three paths that bring customers to us
Before we compare fabrics and foams, it's worth looking at who actually orders a made-to-measure cushion. In our orders and support conversations, three starting points repeat so reliably that we now recognise them as patterns.
What's striking is what's missing from this list: almost nobody comes to us because they deliberately bought a €30 cushion as a stopgap and are now upgrading. Far more often, the cheap cushion was the standard choice until it visibly gave up after one or two summers. The criterion-by-criterion comparison shows why that happens so reliably.
Standard cushion or made to measure: the comparison at a glance
We're comparing the two types that most often go head-to-head on balconies and patios: the cheap standard polyester cushion from a DIY store or marketplace (typically 150 cm long, 4 to 6 cm thick, €25 to €45) and a made-to-measure Nizza bench cushion in 100% olefin with a PUR foam core. We deliberately leave out brand names — the differences lie in the construction, not the logo.

The price difference is real, and it isn't small. Whether it pays off comes down to three things: colour, core and size. We'll look at each in turn.
Criterion 1: Colour, or why "UV-resistant" guarantees nothing
Almost every outdoor cushion today carries the label "UV-resistant" or "weatherproof". Neither term is protected, and there's no minimum standard a manufacturer must meet to use them. Only one figure is meaningful: the light fastness grade on the blue wool scale from 1 to 8. Each grade roughly doubles the exposure time before the colour visibly fades. What matters is how the colour gets into the fibre. With cheap polyester cushions, the finished fabric is dyed, so the colour sits only on the surface. UV radiation breaks down this layer summer after summer, first on the seat, then along the edges. With solution-dyed olefin, the pigment is mixed into the liquid fibre before it's spun. What does UV-resistant actually mean for cushions?
In practice, it only means the fabric won't break down under sunlight. The term says nothing about colour loss. A cushion can be UV-resistant and still look grey instead of anthracite after one summer. The only question that actually helps is: "What light fastness grade does the fabric have?" If you don't get an answer, that's your answer.
UV resistance and weather resistance are two different things
Weather resistance describes how a fabric handles moisture, temperature changes and mould. UV resistance describes how it handles sunlight. A cushion can have one without the other: a coated polyester cushion may shed water perfectly in year one and still fade. A cushion is only truly weatherproof once both come together — water-repellent by material and colourfast right through the fibre. One detail shows just how directly UV protection in the material decides lifespan: there's no aftercare treatment that makes a piece-dyed fabric light-fast. Impregnation sprays help against water and stains, not against fading. UV protection is decided at the point of purchase, not afterwards.
Criterion 2: The core, or why the cushion has sagged after one summer
The second path to us almost always begins with the same sentence: "You can feel the slats." Cheap cushions are filled with 4 to 6 cm of polyester wadding or a very light foam. Both feel soft and pleasant in the shop. Outdoors, two things happen: the filling compresses under body weight and stops springing back, and it absorbs moisture that stays trapped between the fibres. A sagging cushion is therefore often also one that never fully dries out inside.

A side effect that's often overlooked: an 8 cm cushion changes the seat height. For low-seated lounge furniture that's welcome; for a bench at the dining table, it's worth checking the table height first. If in doubt, choose 6 cm with a firm core rather than 8 cm with a soft one.
Criterion 3: Size, or why 150 cm isn't always 150 cm
This is where the difference that stays invisible on the shop shelf lies. A standard cushion comes in a few sizes — for benches usually 110, 150 or 180 cm. But balcony benches, lounge modules and wall benches are rarely exactly that long. A 135 cm bench ends up either with a 110 cm cushion leaving a 25 cm gap, or a 150 cm one that overhangs on both sides, rests unevenly and tips. Both look makeshift, and both wear out faster at the edges because the cushion gets folded over the edge.
We have no standard sizes. Every Nizza bench cushion is entered into the configurator by length, width and thickness, then cut and sewn to exactly that spec, with a tolerance of no more than 1 cm for cushions under 100 cm. The configurator accepts lengths from 25 to 300 cm and widths from 25 to 130 cm; from 135 cm length, a centre seam runs through the cover. Cut-outs for posts or armrests are arranged by email. For the first of the three paths customers take, size is the whole point: anyone with a high-quality frame for which the manufacturer no longer supplies cushions won't find a replacement on any standard shelf. The alternative would be to throw the frame away. In that case, a made-to-measure cushion isn't the expensive option — it's the only one that saves the furniture.
The honest 3-year sum
Now to the question in the title. We'll run the numbers for a 150 × 50 cm bench cushion across three scenarios we see in everyday life. To keep the maths verifiable, we lay out our assumptions openly and deliberately calculate in favour of the cheap cushion: €30 each (market observation €25 to €45, 4 to 6 cm thick), replaced every summer because the colour or core gives way after one season. For the made-to-measure cushion, we use the configurator price in standard olefin, €204 (as of September 2026), and the lifespan we expect for our cushions with good care: 8 to 12 years, as described in our bench cushion guide.

Do the maths with your own price: divide the price of the made-to-measure cushion by the price of your current cushion per summer. At €204 and €30, the break-even point is just under seven summers; at €40 per summer, it's already five. Every summer after that is money saved, and the bench looked better every summer before it, too.
The maths is honest, which is why the cheap cushion wins the first scenario: anyone with a bench of exactly 150 cm, planning for three summers and able to live with a faded cushion, pays less. But that's rarely the case we actually see. Most benches, lounges and balcony furniture have no standard size, and most customers want to use their furniture for longer than three summers. As soon as either condition applies, the maths tips: either from the seventh summer onward via the price per season, or immediately, because no matching standard cushion exists at all. There, the left-hand column isn't a price — it's a new piece of furniture.
When the cheap cushion is still the right choice
A comparison in which the made-to-measure provider always wins wouldn't be honest. There are situations where we'd recommend the standard cushion ourselves:
- The balcony is covered and north-facing. Without direct sun, the strongest argument — light fastness — barely matters. Then comfort comes down to the core alone.
- The bench genuinely has a standard size. A garden bench with exactly 150 cm of seating gets a matching cushion off the shelf. The sizing advantage disappears.
- The use is short-term. Anyone keeping a flat with a balcony for only one more season, or needing extra seating for a single event, buys cheap and passes the cushion on afterwards.
- The furniture itself is a stopgap. Putting a made-to-measure cushion on a frame that will be replaced next year only pays off if the dimensions match its successor.
In all other cases — the majority on sunny balconies — the maths tips in favour of made-to-measure by the third summer at the latest, and it tips sooner the less the standard size matches the furniture.
Weatherproof made-to-measure cushions for the balcony: which model fits
Balconies rarely have room for a full lounge set, but almost always for one or two seats that get used intensively. We have a model for each:

All models are made from the same olefin — standard, patterned weaves or premium — and can be combined with one another. If you can't decide between the three qualities, order free fabric samples and leave them on the balcony for a week. Whatever the fabric doesn't do there, it won't do later either.
Five questions to ask before buying, no matter who from
Cheap or made to measure: these five questions separate genuinely weatherproof outdoor cushions from ones that are only weatherproof on the label.
- What light fastness grade does the fabric have? Below 7, it will show on a south-facing balcony. No answer is an answer.
- Is the fabric solution-dyed or piece-dyed? Only solution-dyed fibres carry the colour in their core. Olefin, Acrylic or Polyester? shows the difference between the three common outdoor fibres.
- Where does the water repellency come from? From the material, or from a coating that wears off and needs re-impregnating?
- What's in the core, and how thick is it? Polyester wadding under 6 cm compresses over time. PUR foam in mattress quality from 6 cm upward keeps its shape.
- Does the size fit to the centimetre? If not, the cushion ages twice as fast at the edges where it overhangs or rests unevenly.

Yes. This is the question we're asked most often before a purchase. Our cushions are made from 100% solution-dyed olefin with light fastness grade 7 to 8. The colour pigments sit inside the fibre core, so the fabric doesn't fade even on a south-facing balcony. The cover is water-repellent by material, and the PUR foam core dries from the inside after rain.

Can weatherproof cushions stay outside all summer?
Brief showers and dew aren't a problem — just stand the cushion on its edge to dry afterwards. In prolonged rain and over winter, even weatherproof cushions belong in a dry box or indoors, because standing moisture puts strain on any core. The difference from a standard cushion: olefin stays colourfast throughout and doesn't develop mould, and the cover simply gets wiped down once dry.
How long does an olefin outdoor cushion last?
Because the colour sits inside the fibre core, the fabric doesn't lose colour over many seasons, and the PUR foam in mattress quality keeps its shape. How long a cushion lasts overall depends mainly on winter storage and cleaning. We've been making them since 2020, and many cushions from our first years are still in use today.
Are there water-repellent made-to-measure cushions for the balcony?
